Latest Unemployment Figures Show Educators Heavily Impacted by Layoffs

NCAE President Sheri Strickland was quoted this weekend in news reports on the latest unemployment figures from the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina. The Commission's July report, announced on Friday,  noted a loss of 11,800 local governement jobs due mainly to layoffs in education.

"We know that our public schools are suffering because of job cuts and lay-offs due to the budget adopted by the General Assembly, and the state unemployment report released today reinforces that our schools are being hardest hit in these difficult times,” said NCAE President Sheri Strickland, in a statement issued on Friday in response to the double-digit unemployment figures.

“We know that this will negatively impact the quality of education for our children,” Strickland said. “The Republican led- legislature has added to our economic woes by letting public education take a big hit. Strickland also noted that North Carolina's per pupil expenditure will most likely drop to 49th in the nation.Read her full statement here.
