NCAE Fact Sheet




1. Who can become a member of NCAE?
NCAE membership is open to any public school educator, administrator, education support personnel, student or retired teacher. See the NCAE Constitution for more information.


2. How many members does NCAE have?
The Association has more than 65,000 members consisting of educators, administrators, education support personnel, students and retired teachers.


3. When was NCAE founded?
NCAE was formed on July 1, 1970, by the merger of the North Carolina Education Association (NCEA) and the North Carolina Teachers Association (NCTA). The NCEA was organized in 1857 and the NCTA was organized in 1880.


4. How many local units does NCAE have?
NCAE has 130 local units in public school districts, special State schools, and institutions of higher education.


5. How long has NCAE occupied its Raleigh headquarters?
NCAE occupied its modern headquarters, the NCAE Center, in 1979.


6. How many people does NCAE employ?
NCAE employs 73 staff, support and professional, including 35 UniServ Directors in regional offices across the state who assist members with professional issues.


7. Who is NCAE governed by?
NCAE is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of educators who serve three-year terms.


8. How does NCAE rank in size with other NEA affiliates?
NCAE ranks 14th in size of the 53 NEA affiliates. NCAE does have the largest Representative Assembly among the 53 NEA affiliates.


9. What is SNCAE?
SNCAE is the college student organization of NCAE. NCAE has one of the largest college student organizations among NEA affiliates.
