Providing scholarships to help recruit tomorrow's teachers and giving students an opportunity to express their creativity through art are two ways NCAE shows it cares about public school children.
Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship
Awarded annually to college juniors for use in their senior year, the Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship is named in memory of Mary Morrow, who served as the first president of the North Carolina Classroom Teachers Association, and Edna Cotten Richards, an outstanding leader in the North Carolina Teachers Association and the NCAE. Annually, six students who are enrolled in North Carolina teacher-education programs and are willing to teach in North Carolina's public schools at least two years after graduation receive $1,000 each, which is paid by NCAE directly to the institution in which the student is enrolled. The scholarship recipients are selected based on academic achievement, financial need, character and evidence of promise as a teacher.
Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship
High school seniors who are planning to attend college can apply for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship, presented by the NCAE Minority Affairs Commission. Named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the $500 scholarship is given to a deserving North Carolina student in honor of King's life and legacy. It is presented at NCAE's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Banquet, held in January.
Future Teachers of America (FTA)
The FTA, an affiliate of NCAE, also provides scholarships for students. Each year three scholarships are awarded to high school seniors, one for $1,000 and two for $500.
NCAE Minority Affairs Arts Contest
The NCAE Minority Affairs Arts Contest encourages local affiliates and districts to solicit the participation of students and teachers. The competition is open to all students in grades K-12 and teachers who are members of NCAE. Entries must reflect minority awareness and can be submitted in the categories of art work, short stories or poetry, essays, teaching unit for minority awareness, and quiz book. Winners are announced during the Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet and their work is displayed at the NCAE Center through the month of February.
