Mary Morrow/Edna Richards Scholarship

Dedicated to Excellence in Classroom Teaching

The Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship was named in memory of Mary Frank Morrow, who served as the first president of the North Carolina Classroom Teachers Association, and Edna Cotton Richards, an outstanding leader within the North Carolina Teachers Association and the North Carolina Association of Educators.

In 1931 the first local unit of NCCTA was organized with Miss Morrow as president. The North Carolina Education Association was formed the following year. The name of Mary Frank Morrow was placed in the North Carolina Education Hall of Fame in 1966.

Mrs. Edna Cotton Richards was appointed Executive Secretary of the Division of Classroom Teachers of the North Carolina Teachers Association in 1959. She went on to hold many leadership and advisory positions within the NCAE and NEA until her retirement in 1981. Mrs. Richards was a lifelong teacher and leader.

Both women, through their diligent work and dedication to the teaching profession, led exemplary lives. This scholarship honors their distinguished careers.
