NCAE members, along with state and community leaders, gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King during the Association’s annual MLK Banquet. Keynote speaker, Dr. Timothy Tyson, author of the best-selling novel “Blood Done Sign My Name,” talked about the civil rights movement and the influence Dr. King had on this most important event in history. “Dr. King isn’t dead,” said Tyson, to a round of applause from the audience. “He lives in you and in me.” For his long-term dedication and commitment to making North Carolina a more equitable community, Tyson was presented with the 2012 NCAE Excellence in Equity Award by President Sheri Strickland.
