Today NCAE released the following statement from President Tamika Walker Kelly on the veto override of SB49:

“Every student deserves the freedom to learn in a classroom that is safe and welcoming to all. As educators who are entrusted by parents with the responsibility to teach age-appropriate lessons and prepare their children for the future, we are very disappointed in today’s vote and worried for our students, especially those who are LGBTQ+. Today’s vote won’t change the fact that the vast majority of North Carolina parents trust educators’ judgement in the classroom. We also remain committed to working with parents and community members of all backgrounds to ensure that every single student gets a great education."
