The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) today launched a digital ad campaign calling on state lawmakers to oppose a massive expansion of taxpayer-funded private school vouchers. The ads begin today and will run through planned voting sessions next week in more than a dozen state legislative districts statewide.

While the majority of North Carolinians believe in the value of our public schools, some state lawmakers are planning to undermine those schools with a massive expansion of taxpayer-funded private school vouchers.

A recent survey revealed that North Carolina educators are spending around $1,300 of their own money on school supplies - $400 more than the national average. That’s 4th most in the country.

North Carolina fell two spots in the teacher pay rankings, dropping to 38th in the nation. Even more troubling for teacher retention, North Carolina’s average teacher salary ($56,559) comes in at almost $13,000 below the national average.

Our state lawmakers' plan to spend more than $500 million of taxpayer money on private school vouchers next year will take vital opportunities away from the 85% of our K-12 students that go to public schools. Rather than funding posh private schools, imagine how much brighter our students' future would be if lawmakers invested in their public schools.

Today, the North Carolina Association of Educators released the following statement in regards to Governor Cooper's proposed state budget.

NCAE was proud to endorse each of these candidates based on their commitment to public education, their experience, and their connection to our members. NCAE now looks forward to a general election in which the future of public schools, where the vast majority of North Carolina students attend, will be a central issue for voters with these candidates as standard-bearers.
