The Position

The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) seeks a highly motivated, skilled, and dedicated individual to fill the role of Professional Practices and Professional Development Specialist. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting and advancing the professional growth, best practices, and work to fulfill NCAE’s mission to create a culture of professional excellence by offering high-quality training and offerings to public school employees across the state. The person in this position will report to the Deputy Director of Professional Practices.

JOB RESPONSBILITIES:

Professional Practices and Development:

  • Develop programs, activities, and implement strategies to enhance professional practices opportunities using multimedia, social media, and learning tools that meet the needs of a diverse public-school personnel – administrators, ESP, teachers, etc.
  • Provide guidance on effective teaching methods, classroom management, and innovative instructional approaches.
  • Collaborate with educators to address challenges and share best practices for student engagement and learning.
  • Design, coordinate, and facilitate member-centered professional development programs that support educator success, benefit students, build instructional leadership roles, and align with NCAE's vision of creating equitable public schools and classrooms.
  • Identify relevant topics and trends in education to tailor training sessions that meet the evolving needs of educators.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of professional development initiatives through assessments and feedback mechanisms.

Curriculum Enhancement:

  • Work closely with educators to enhance curriculum development and implementation.
  • Provide resources and support for integrating technology, diverse teaching methods, and differentiated instruction into the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with curriculum specialists to align materials with state standards and educational trends.

Coaching and Community Building Programs:

  • Develop and oversee mentorship programs to support new and early-career educators, educators of color, community schools’ cadres, etc.
  • Provide ongoing training and resources to enhance their effectiveness.

Advocacy and Policy Engagement:

  • Be knowledgeable of state K-12 curriculum, educator evaluation instruments while staying informed of state and national education policies impacting professional development.

Be knowledgeable about licensure procedures, requirements, and standards to advise members who serve on the IPD Commission, the NCAE NBCT Network and NCAE Board of Directors.

  • Serve as staff liaison as assigned to member leadership bodies such as the NCAE Instruction and Professional Development (IPD) Commission; various IPD/NEA/NCAE Awards, the NCAE Beginning Teacher Organizing Program, NCAE NBCT Network and the Instructional Leadership Institute.

Resource Development:

  • Create and curate resources, toolkits, and materials to support educators in their professional development journey.
  • Establish partnerships with organizations and experts to bring valuable resources to NCAE members.
  • Ensure the accessibility and relevance of resources for educators across diverse backgrounds.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Deputy Director of Professional Practices or their designee

Qualifications:

Required

  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Knowledge of adult training principles and techniques as well as skills necessary to develop and present materials to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to learn data platforms, proficient computer, and communication skills, including social media and its applications
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of NCAE.
  • Able to travel and work occasional weekends

Preferred

  • Advance degree in Education, Curriculum Development, or a related field.
  • Teaching certification, significant classroom, and PD facilitation experience
  • Background in professional development issues connected to state mandates, educational policy, school leadership, successful teaching practices, and student and professional evaluation.
  • Understanding of trade unions utilization of professional development and skills training programs as strategy to raise employment standards and expand member voice with policy decision-makers (preferred)
  • Established relationships among education stakeholders in North Carolina (preferred)

Location: Position is based in Raleigh, NC. Able to travel and work occasional weekends.

Compensation: The annual salary range for this position is between Step 0 $61,681 and Step 5 $71,159.00 of the current NCAE/NCSO professional staff union contract depending on relevant experience plus benefits.
