Raleigh, NC - The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) is proud to announce the induction of Dr. John Harding Lucas into the North Carolina Educational Hall of Fame. Dr. Lucas was a lifelong member of NCAE and a true pioneer in public education.

A proud graduate of Shaw University and North Carolina Central University, Dr. Lucas served as a teacher, coach, and principal at schools in Kinston and Oxford, and most notably in Durham, where he was principal of the historic Hillside High School for more than 20 years. Under his leadership, Hillside became a beacon of excellence and innovation in academics, athletics, and student achievement. Dr. Lucas later continued his service to public education as a member of the Durham City School Board and subsequently the newly merged Durham Public Schools Board.

Dr. Lucas also ushered in a new era of educator advocacy and unity when he proposed the “Lucas Concept,” which guided the integration and merger of the White North Carolina Teachers Association and the Black North Carolina Education Association into what is now the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE).

Dr. Lucas passed away in March of last year at the age of 104.

“Dr. Lucas’ passion, commitment, and dedication to education are a testament to the work we continue today," said NCAE President Tamika Walker Kelly. "He remains an inspiration and a powerful example of educational excellence and the profound impact educators can have not only on students, but on entire communities. We are honored to induct Dr. Lucas into the North Carolina Educational Hall of Fame.”
