Veto Override Opts NC Into Federal Tax Credit Program

Raleigh, NC - The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) released the following statement today in response to the General Assembly's override of Governor Stein's veto of HB 87:

"Today, the Republican-controlled General Assembly completed the override of Governor Stein's veto of House Bill 87 — doubling down on private school vouchers while North Carolina demands more, not less, for our public school students," said Tamika Walker Kelly, NCAE President.

"This legislature has already driven North Carolina to 50th in the nation in per-student spending. Today’s action will only make it worse. Rather than invest in the students who need it most, lawmakers have found another way to provide tax giveaways to the wealthy at the expense of working families who depend on public education.

This is ultimately about values. Republican leaders have chosen private schools over public ones, wealthy donors over working families, and corporations over kids — again.

North Carolina's educators will not forget it as we march into the next election cycle."
