RALEIGH — NCAE today released the following statement upon the news of the passing of former Governor Jim Hunt.

"We mourn the loss of former Governor Jim Hunt, the Education Governor, a lifelong champion of public schools, and a true friend to all public school educators and NCAE. He was a leader who understood that strong schools are the foundation upon which our great state is built.

Governor Hunt was a tireless advocate who never missed an opportunity to lift up the value of public education and to call for greater investment—from early childhood education to K–12 schools and workforce development. His vision provided opportunities for generations of North Carolina students.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Hunt family. All of North Carolina, and public school educators in particular, owe Governor Hunt a deep debt of gratitude. His steadfast commitment to public education will continue to inspire our state as we carry forward the work of building a brighter future for all."
