Raleigh, NC — The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) released the following statement in response to the Blue Ribbon Commission on Public Education announced today by Governor Josh Stein, President Pro Tem Phil Berger, and Speaker of the House Destin Hall.
“Talk to any classroom educator in North Carolina and they can tell you all about what’s working in our public schools," said Tamika Walker Kelly, NCAE President. You will also hear their biggest challenge is plainly obvious: our schools are simply not getting the resources they need to fulfill our constitutional duty to provide every child with a high-quality education. But today’s Blue Ribbon Commission ignores that reality.
For more than a decade, North Carolina has prioritized the needs of billionaires and corporations. Tax breaks and vouchers are the reason why North Carolina ranks 50th in the nation in public school funding. What our state needs is a real commitment to prioritizing our kids over big corporations, not another committee.”
