RALEIGH – The North Carolina Association of Educators today released the following statement in regards to the current debate in the U.S. Congress over H.R. 1, the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill."

"Today marks the anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act—a landmark moment in the ongoing fight for equal opportunity in America. As educators, we believe every child, no matter their income, race, gender, or family background, deserves access to a high-quality public education. Yet H.R. 1 threatens that promise by diverting public funds to private school vouchers and draining resources from the schools that serve the vast majority of our students. It also puts countless families at risk by slashing essential programs like Medicaid and SNAP, all while expanding tax breaks for the wealthy.

We urge North Carolina’s congressional delegation to reject this immoral and irresponsible legislation. Our students and families deserve better."

  - Tamika Walker Kelly, NCAE President
