Raleigh, NC - The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) released the following statement in response to the slate of constitutional amendments passed today.
"What happened at the General Assembly this week was corrupt — and North Carolinians should be alarmed," said Tamika Walker Kelly, NCAE President.
"The Republican led General Assembly is ten months late on passing a state budget. Our schools are underfunded. Families across this state are struggling with rising Duke Energy bills, Aetna Healthcare premiums, food and gas prices. And instead of addressing pocket book issues and funding our schools, Republican lawmakers pass a slate of ballot measures that sound like a win for working families but are designed to do one thing: lock in tax breaks for billionaires and corporations — permanently.
When working class families and billionaires pay the same tax rate, billionaires get richer and working families lose.
These amendments are a love letter to the billionaires and corporations that have funded their political power.
Ultimately, our kids will pay the price as we hand away their future.”
