Director of Organizing and Field Services

The Organizing and Field Services Director will design field plans, anchor strategic planning in targeted locals, refine the union’s strategies for achieving membership recruitment, engagement, leadership development, and power building goals, help develop a culture of learning and results-oriented experimentation, and oversee a growing, multi-tiered field team in counties across the state.

The Position

The North Carolina Association of Educators seeks a talented, dedicated, and experienced union organizer, manager, and campaign strategist to fill the Organizing and Field Services Director position. The Field Director will design field plans, anchor strategic planning in targeted locals, refine the union’s strategies for achieving membership recruitment, engagement, leadership development, and power building goals, help develop a culture of learning and results-oriented experimentation, and oversee a growing, multi-tiered field team in counties across the state. The Organizing and Field Services Director will report directly to the Executive Director and interact on a regular basis with the Officers of the Union, Board of Directors and Local Union Leadership.

About North Carolina Association of Educators:

The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) is a member-led, democratic union that’s building a movement to defend and transform public education in our state. In the last three years we've led the largest educator walkouts in state history, and mobilized thousands of voters across the state to the polls as part of our successful campaign to halt the privatizer-controlled General Assembly’s decade-long legislative assault on our educators, students, and communities. In that same time, several of our locals have also fought for and won historic pay increases for custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and other staff and harnessed the momentum from those wins to propel themselves into ranking among the fastest-growing National Education Association affiliates in the country.

We're on the cusp of restoring North Carolina as a national leader on education policy and are making moves from the Sandhills to the Mountains to win the schools our students deserve.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintains primary responsibility for implementing the policies, programs, and strategic plan of the organization within the field across locals
  • Approves comprehensive organizing campaign plans
  • Develops multi-year organizing and field plans
  • Work as part of the senior leadership team, including organization-wide planning, and advises principals on strategy particularly impact the growth goals of membership and leadership development
  • Leads a diverse, multi-tiered/leadership field team, including managing of managers
  • Facilitates strategic planning with field staff, members and elected local union leaders
  • Oversees and manages all organizing campaigns and field projects as directed by the executive director
  • Develops and administers the organizing and field budget as directed by executive director
  • Integrates department, local, state, and national issue-campaigns across the state among all members and field staff.
  • Assists and advises the union’s President and Board of Directors in developing organizational vision, strategic plans, and campaigns in response to the changing external environment and the emerging issues that affect educators
  • Helps ensure the implementation of an organizing culture throughout the union, including overseeing a unified approach to member grievances and other worksite concerns
  • Directs, supervises, and evaluates staff
  • Evaluates programs and campaigns
  • Trains, develops, and holds field staff accountable in all aspects of their work
  • Incorporates staff development and accountability into all aspects of planning, implementation, and development of field plans
  • Administers contract and personnel policies adopted by the Board of Directors for field staff
  • Works with NCAE’s data team and senior staff to create and ensure compliance with data standards for all field staff

QUALIFICATIONS

Required - Qualified applicants will possess a majority of the following:

  • Bold commitment to winning historic workplace improvements and broad protections for working class communities and communities of color in Southern states that have banned collective bargaining for public employees
  • At least 10 years of labor organizing experience
  • At least 7 years of experience designing and directing union campaigns, including rapid response “hot shop” worksite campaigns, issue-based campaigns, new recognition campaigns, and/or comprehensive campaigns.
  • At least 5 years of staff management experience in a labor organizing context, including deep experience managing managers
  • Experience managing comprehensive workplace or issue-based campaigns, including leveraging legal, research, political, and other strategies
  • A proven track record of creating innovative programs and strategies to win a union or win tangible campaign victories
  • Experience leading and training managers and management teams who lead organizing staff
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, meeting frequent and tight deadlines
  • An excellent collaborator and team player
  • A willingness to work nights and weekends when needed, and to shadow, coach and train field and organizing managers in counties across the state
  • High aptitude for executing new programs and navigating relationships in complex and politically sensitive organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in non-traditional organizing and bargaining models and/or experience building union power and voice in the public sector in right to work states with a public sector collective bargaining ban
  • Experience with innovative approaches to union-building and membership programs

Logistics:

Location: Raleigh, NC - Must have ability and willingness to travel in state with occasional travel out-of-state.

Compensation:

  • Salary: $105,000 - $125,000/yr., based on experience
