Whose Future? Our Future!

NCAE's newest video essay tells our story and how educators are fighting back to defend our public schools and reclaim our democracy!
Our Future!

For 160 years and eight generations, North Carolina's public schools have been more than classrooms — they've been the heart of our communities, the foundation of our multiracial democracy, and the backbone of our economy. That promise was written into our state constitution in 1868, in the aftermath of the Civil War, when the people demanded a free public education for every child. Today, more than 200,000 public school workers carry that promise forward, showing up every day to teach, feed, counsel, and care for 1.5 million North Carolina kids. Whose Future? Our Future! is the story of that promise — and of the fight to keep it.

A leading voice for educational excellence

The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) is our leading voice for educational excellence, for children and their families, and for the public schools they count on. As the public school employees union and the largest association of professional educators in North Carolina, our membership extends to all 100 counties and includes teachers, classified school staff, administrators, students, retirees, and community allies. NCAE believes that every child has a right to a high-quality education, an excellent teacher, and a well-funded school.
