For 160 years and eight generations, North Carolina's public schools have been more than classrooms — they've been the heart of our communities, the foundation of our multiracial democracy, and the backbone of our economy. That promise was written into our state constitution in 1868, in the aftermath of the Civil War, when the people demanded a free public education for every child. Today, more than 200,000 public school workers carry that promise forward, showing up every day to teach, feed, counsel, and care for 1.5 million North Carolina kids. Whose Future? Our Future! is the story of that promise — and of the fight to keep it.
